Let's get something out of the way. When people hear “AI is coming for accounting,” there's often a moment of panic. Is AI going to replace accountants? Probably not in the way your favorite science-fiction movie would have you believe. But is AI going to take some of the tedious, repetitive, mind-numbing work off their plates?
Absolutely.
And honestly? It’s about time.
The most useful way to think about AI in accounting isn't: “A robot is doing my accounting.” It's:
“My accounting software can help me do my job faster.” That's an important distinction.
Microsoft describes Copilot in Business Central as an AI-powered assistant designed to help users complete tasks faster, analyze information, and eliminate tedious work. Business Central also now includes AI agents that can handle specific processes with minimal human input while keeping the work transparent and reviewable.
That's less Terminator and more “Hey, can you handle this annoying thing for me?” We'll take it.
This is where things get interesting. Business Central's current AI capabilities include assistance with financial processes such as:
The Payables Agent can monitor incoming vendor invoices, extract information, match invoices to purchase orders and receipts, and help route exceptions.
Expense Agent can help capture receipts, identify information such as merchant, amount, date, and category, and check expenses against company policies.
Copilot can assist with matching bank statement transactions to ledger entries and suggesting posting accounts for unmatched transactions.
Copilot can help turn lists of financial data into more useful analysis using natural-language requests, including grouping, filtering, pivots, and totals.
Business Central also provides AI-assisted cash-flow analysis to help businesses project future inflows and outflows.
That's a pretty significant evolution from: “Here's another spreadsheet. Have fun.”
Here's where we're going to disagree with the doom-and-gloom headlines: Accounting expertise isn't going away.
AI can process information, identify patterns, make recommendations, and automate repetitive tasks. But businesses still need people who understand what the numbers mean. Someone still needs to review exceptions, make decisions, understand the business behind the numbers, and someone definitely still needs to ask: “Why is THAT number suddenly enormous?”
AI can help get you to the answer faster.
The real opportunity isn't necessarily shaving a few minutes off a task. It's what your team can do with all those minutes when they add up. Imagine spending less time:
…and more time:
That's the real promise of AI in accounting. Not replacing expertise. Freeing expertise to do more valuable work.
This isn't some far-off “maybe someday” feature. Microsoft's 2026 Business Central updates are continuing to expand AI-powered agents and automation across business processes, including financial workflows. And Microsoft specifically positions Business Central as an ERP platform that combines financial management with AI-powered automation, reporting, forecasting, and broader business operations.
So the question for businesses isn't necessarily: “Will AI change accounting?” It already is. The better question is: “Are we taking advantage of it?”
AI isn't here to take the calculator away from your accounting team. It's here to take some of the busywork away from them. And if your accounting professionals would rather spend their day analyzing financial information, solving problems, and helping your business grow instead of copying invoice numbers from one screen to another…we're very much on board.
